part 2. the exhibition
Cosmos Project
8 visual artists and 8 composers came together to create artworks
We were paired up into 8 groups and we were each assigned a planet from the Solar system
I was paired up with Oliver Cameron and we had Earth as our subject.
exhibition. Gallery 2010.
Earth
Oli (composer) and I chose 8 small objects - 4 natural & 4 man-made - that we thought would symbolically represent Earth. They were paired up into odd yet meaningful couples. The egg and bullet symbolise birth/life and death. The coin and pearl symbolise prosperity and value. The leaf/flower petal and matchstick symbolise construction and destruction. Finally the screw and snowflake symbolise structure. Putting all of these huge meanings into pocket-size items was our idea, connecting also to how small Earth actually is compared to the entire universe.
As I was to create the visual side of the collaborative work, I focused on depicting the items as iconic and recognisable as possible. I also intended to make them look like scientific illustrations of specimens of Earth, as if I were an extraterrestrial visitor.
